PD5-Series SMD High Voltage Diodes

PD5 Series SMD High Voltage Diodes

PD5-Series SMD High Voltage Diodes

The PD5 series SMD high voltage diodes are a surface-mount rectifier family rated up to 5 kV, built with a gullwing SMD package that keeps one board footprint across current ratings. Each 5KV SMD high voltage diode uses high thermal conductivity epoxy molding and a fast recovery design for high-speed switching circuits.

Compact SMD Package Built for High-Voltage Duty

The PD5 series is a surface-mount high voltage rectifier family. Each device uses SMD connection with gullwing (outer bend) shapes, and the whole series is made in the same ultra-small package size, so a board laid out around one current rating can be re-populated with another model without changing the footprint.

Construction and switching behaviour

High thermal conductivity epoxy compound molding carries heat away from the junction, while the fast recovery design keeps switching losses low in high-speed circuits and supports efficient energy conversion.

  • SMD connection with gullwing (outer bend) shapes for surface-mount assembly.
  • High thermal conductivity epoxy compound molding for heat dissipation.
  • Fast recovery time supporting high efficiency and low switching losses.
  • Ultra-small package, shared across the fast recovery PD5 series.
  • Robust encapsulation that protects against harsh environmental factors.
  • Surge resistance for large surge currents and transient spikes.

Ultra-low power consumption design is intended to improve rectifier circuit conversion efficiency, and the series is described as performing well in high temperature environments with consistent performance under extended operation.

PD5 Series Specifications and Model Range

Fourteen current variants are published, from PD5A at 20 mA to PD5N at 500 mA. All of them carry a 5 KV repetitive reverse voltage rating and a 10 A forward surge current rating, with reverse leakage listed as 1 / 20 µA (Irrm1 / Irrm2). Forward voltage drop rises with the current rating, from 4.1 V on PD5A to 6.2 V on PD5N.

Recovery time splits into two groups: 70 nS for PD5A through PD5F, and 75 nS for PD5G through PD5N.

Selecting the Right PD5 Model for Your Circuit

Because the package is shared, the choice between models comes down to rated current and the resulting forward drop. The steps below follow the published table.

Model selection centres on current rating within the same 5 KV voltage class
  1. 1

    Confirm the voltage class

Every published PD5 model is listed at Vrrm 5 KV, so the reverse voltage requirement is fixed across the series.

  2. 2

    Size the forward current

    Choose from 20 mA on PD5A, stepping through 30, 50, 60, 80, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450 mA, up to 500 mA on PD5N.

  3. 3

    Check the forward voltage drop

Vfm runs from 4.1 V on PD5A to 6.2 V on PD5N, so higher-current models carry a larger forward drop in the circuit.

  4. 4

    Match the recovery time

PD5A to PD5F are listed at 70 nS; PD5G to PD5N are listed at 75 nS. Pick the group that fits the switching speed of the stage.

  5. 5

    Confirm the surge margin

Ifsm is 10 A across the range, with reverse leakage of 1 / 20 µA (Irrm1 / Irrm2) for every model.

  6. 6

Verification Checklist Before Design-In

Before a PD5 model goes onto a board, it is worth confirming the part against the published record rather than relying on a single line of the catalogue.

  • Confirm the model code marked on the part matches the row you selected, from PD5A through PD5N.
  • Re-check the three numbers that drive the design: Vrrm 5 KV, the Io rating in mA, and Trr in nS.
  • Confirm the forward drop Vfm for that exact model, since it changes from 4.1 V to 6.2 V across the range.
  • Confirm the forward surge current Ifsm of 10 A is adequate for the transient events in the circuit.
  • Confirm the reverse leakage figures of 1 / 20 µA are acceptable for the application.
  • Request the downloadable file offered next to the quote action on the product page, and confirm any parameter outside the published table with sales@hvdiode.com.

Because all fast recovery PD5 series parts share one package size, a verified footprint can be reused if the current rating later changes.
